304 Stainless Steel Hinges
304 stainless steel hinges are made with basic 304 steel alloy. This steel is the most commonly used because it withstands extreme environments. 304 stainless steel hinges are instrumental in industrial environments, marine environments, dairy equipment, and food industry facilities (including breweries). These hinges resist rust, water stains, and corrosion from sterilization solutions, inorganic chemicals, and organic acids commonly used in the dye industry.
Many builders use 304 stainless steel hinges as staked hinges. This is a common method used to retain a hinge’s pin and make it more secure, keeping the pin in place. The level of security depends on the amount of times the pin has been staked. For example, some continuous or piano hinges do not have any staking while others are staked regularly to improve the hinge’s operation.
Staking a hinge actually deforms the original shape of the hinge’s material. Using a shape punch, the hinge barrel (which captures the pin) is dimpled into the back of the hinge itself, losing the original shape of the barrel while enhancing the hinge’s overall security.
